Laura Oh – 2025 student editor of the Māori Law Review
Born and raised in Tāmaki Makaurau, Laura’s diverse whakapapa—Pākehā, Māori (Ngāti Rārua, Ngāti Koata, Ngāti Tama, Rangitane o Wairau, Ngāti Toa Rangatira and Ngāi Tahu) and Chinese-Malaysian—continues to shape her academic journey and interests.
Laura is currently a fifth-year LLB/BA (Politics and Māori Studies) student at Waipapa Taumata Rau. She also holds a Diploma in Languages (Chinese & Te Reo Māori). Her studies reflect a deep interest in Māori legal issues, particularly the recognition of tikanga Māori within state law.
At university, Laura actively engages in the Equal Justice Project, through which she volunteers at the Auckland Community Law Centre and serves as their representative on The Law Association of New Zealand’s Trust Committee.
Laura has gained valuable experience in Māori legal and policy issues through various roles. As a former intern at the New Zealand China Council, she researched, authored, and presented a report on the Council’s Te Ao Māori engagement. More recently, she completed a volunteer placement at Te Wai Ariki, where she wrote a report examining the international framework for racial discrimination and its relevance to Māori and Pasifika in Aotearoa, New Zealand.
